SELEX chooses Gedae for Cell
Moorestown, New Jersey. - April 15, 2007 – SELEX, a long time Gedae customer, has chosen Gedae as the development environment for evaluation of the IBM Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.).
While recognizing revolutionary performance advantages the Cell Broadband Engine™ offers, SELEX also recognized the challenges even the most experienced developers can have when programming a multicore architecture. Gedae’s successful usage on the CAPTOR TRANCHE II RADAR PROGRAMME, targeting a complex multi processor system made Gedae the natural choice to evaluate the equally challenging Cell Broadband Engine.
“Gedae is a natural choice for programming the Cell Broadband Engine given our success using Gedae for complex software running on a multiprocessor system,” said David B. Wilson, Engineering and Projects Director, SELEX Sensors and Airborne System
Gedae has been collaborating with IBM’s Global Engineering Solutions unit on developing customized solutions where Gedae’s development environment could be optimized on the Cell Broadband Engine™ for high performance signal processing applications in aerospace and defense.
Gedae software provides a multithreaded compiler that builds an application using global information. The Gedae compiler reduces complexity by automating implementation of efficient multithreaded functions much like a Von Neumann compiler builds functions to target a single CPU. The fundamental units of the Gedae language are software components with well defined interfaces. The Gedae compiler collects components into threads of execution. Once collected, the Gedae compiler identifies and manages the thread interdependencies. Further, Gedae identifies opportunities to share memory within and among threads. Gedae also decomposes threads for distribution to multiple processors and augments those threads to implement the transfer of data as necessary.
Using Gedae, a developer benefits from faster development, easier to upgrade, portable among a variety of disparate architectures.
The revolutionary Cell/B.E. processor is a breakthrough design featuring a central processing core based on IBM's industry-leading Power Architecture™ technology and eight synergistic processing elements (SPE). Cell/B.E. "supercharges" compute-intensive applications, offering fast performance for computer entertainment and handhelds, virtual reality, wireless downloads, real-time video chat, interactive TV shows and other "image-hungry" computing environments. The groundbreaking Cell/B.E. processor appears in products such as Sony Computer Entertainment’s PLAYSTATION®3 and Toshiba’s Cell/B.E. Reference Set, a development tool for Cell/B.E. products, as well as the IBM BladeCenter QS20 and embedded in custom Cell/B.E. based offerings from IBM Global Engineering Solutions.
